On Wednesday, March 19, 2008, the New England Applied Voice Input/Output Society (AVIOS) and Boston-IA (Information Architecture/Internet Accessibility) will present a panel of experts on the use of speech recognition software by people who control computers and surf the Internet using voice— rather than using mouse or keyboard. Molly Corbett (usability specialist and speech accessibility advocate), Kim Patch (founder of Redstart Systems and creator of a program called “Utter Command”), and Stefan Sherwood of Nuance Communications (makers of Dragon NaturallySpeaking— the most widely used software for controlling a personal computer by voice) will demonstrate speech recognition software in action, and share their experiences designing accessible software and visiting web sites by voice. The meeting will raise the issue of best practices for making Web sites accessible for people who surf without using their hands, and discuss whether or not voice control requires special techniques.
The meeting is free for members of Boston-IA, affiliates of AVIOS New England and the Boston Voice Users Group, and employees and guests of Nuance Communications. LIGHT REFRESHMENTS WILL BE SERVED.
