About AVIOS New York/New Jersey/Connecticut

AVIOS is an international speech technology applications professional society, which exists to:

  • Build community among developers and designers of speech applications, researchers, industry suppliers, companies using speech technology in their business, and individuals for whom the technology is of critical importance.
  • Bridge the gap between the emerging voice technology and its application by providing an interactive forum for the technologists, students, system developers, business managers and users actively involved or with an interest in the field of Voice Processing. (See www.avios.org)

We have launched a local chapter in the New York/New Jersey/Connecticut area.

The goal of local AVIOS chapters is to create opportunity for people with interest in speech technology to meet, network, and stay abreast of new developments in the area, by holding monthly or bi-monthly meetings.

Our local chapter plan moving forward is to get together bimonthly at different sites, to meet, mingle, and network with other speech technology professionals in our area. The host site will provide soft drinks and snacks. We hope to have two short presentations at each event, one with a speech technology bent; the other with more of a speech marketing or business focus.

We are looking for volunteers to host this at other sites in the future. I am also looking for volunteers to propose topics they would like to present, or have presented. (Assume a 20-minute presentation slot.)

The New York/New Jersey/Connecticut Chapter of AVIOS is chaired by Sara Basson of IBM research. Sara focuses on accessible service offerings. She has more than a decade of experience in designing and evaluating automated customer services using speech recognition and synthesis technologies at NYNEX Science and Technology (now Verizon). She holds a PhD in Speech and Hearing Sciences from the Graduate Center of CUNY, and an MBA from NYU's Stern School of Business. Sara has served on the AVIOS Board of Directors for 13 years.
