What are Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF)?

SAFs are alternative fuels used in planes to reduce overall carbon emissions compared to traditional fossil fuels.

They include synthetic fuels, biofuels, and recycled carbon fuels made from materials such as waste oils or captured carbon dioxide.

Although SAFs release similar amounts of carbon dioxide, they reuse carbon that’s already in circulation, rather than adding new emissions.

How to collect Avios and tier points when you contribute to SAF

Contributing to SAF means you can collect Avios and tier points without having to book a flight, getting you closer to your travel goals.

    Sign in to your BA Club account

    • Head to the BA Sustainable Aviation Fuels page, where you’ll be prompted to sign in to your account.
    • If you don’t have a British Airways Club account, you’ll need to create one. This only takes a few minutes, and you can start collecting Avios and tier points straight away.

    Select the amount you want to contribute

    • After you’ve signed in, click on the ‘Make a contribution’ button. You’ll then be able to choose how much you’d like to contribute, from a minimum of £10 (100 Avios and 200 tier points) to a maximum of £1,000 (10,000 Avios and 20,000 tier points).

    Choose your payment method

    Once you’ve selected the amount you want to donate, you’ll be taken to the payment page. Here, you can choose how you’d like to pay. You can:

    • Pay entirely in cash to collect Avios and tier points
    • Part-pay with Avios to collect tier points on the total amount and earn Avios on the cash portion
    • Or pay entirely with Avios to collect just tier points

    Enjoy your extra Avios and tier points

    Avios Hotels
    • Once you’ve paid, your Avios and tier points will be credited to your account immediately. You can then use them right away on Reward Flights, hotels, or in the Avios Shop.
    • SAF is crucial to reducing the carbon emissions associated with aviation and is a key part of British Airways’ plans to reach net zero carbon emissions by 2050.

There are four different BA Club tiers:

  • Blue: 0 tier points
  • Bronze: 3,500 tier points
  • Silver: 7,500 tier points
  • Gold: 20,000 tier points

Your Club membership starts at the Blue tier, and if you earn enough tier points in each collection year between 1 April and 31 March, you can progress to Bronze, Silver or Gold.

Avios is the loyalty currency of The British Airways Club and its partners. You'll collect Avios on flights and holidays bookings. Once you’ve collected enough, take to the skies and spend your Avios on flights, discover incredible hotels or experience unforgettable adventures.

Tier points are the points that you earn to move through the membership tiers of the Club and unlock more benefits. Unlike Avios, tier points can’t be spent on rewards and they expire at the end of each tier point collection year on 31 March.

You can see how many tier points you'll earn when you search for a holiday on ba.com. Any applicable extra tier points earned on the flight elements won't be included in the quotes.

After you've travelled, you can see the tier points you've earned, including extra tier points, on the statement in your account. These will appear 14 working days after you return from your trip.

Yes, you'll earn tier points based on the total cost of your holiday package (excluding any charges payable at the accommodation) before the saving using Avios was applied.
