Avios is a reward currency used by seven airline loyalty programmes, including British Airways Club, Iberia Club and AerClub. Once you've joined a participating programme, you can collect Avios when booking flights, shopping with retail partners or using eligible credit cards.

To start collecting Avios you need an account with an airline club that uses Avios. There are seven of them:

Once you have an account with one (or more) of these clubs, they will act as the ‘wallet’ for your Avios and are held there ready for you to use. And there are a number of different ways to collect Avios once you’ve got your account up and running.

You’ve probably guessed the answer to this one. You can collect Avios on flights, and there are a couple of different ways to do it.

You can do it by logging into your airline club account and booking flights with that airline. The Avios you collect will be clear at checkout and will normally added to your account within 3 to 7 days after you complete your journey.

There are also more than 30 different airline partners you can collect Avios with if you’re a member of one (or more) of the seven Avios airline clubs.

Yes. One of the simplest things you can do to grow your balance is shop online via avios.com.

All you need to do search on avios.com or the app for one of more than 2,000 retail partners that let you collect Avios when shopping online.

These include high street favourites such as Marks & Spencer, John Lewis and Boots.

Many brands offer bonus Avios collection rates from time to time, so keep an eye out to see what your favourite stores are offering.

And if you use your Avios collecting credit card to pay for your purchase, you can also get additional Avios from your card payment.

There are two different ways to collect in-store and help build your Avios balance through everyday spending.

Log in to your account to register your credit or debit card (you can add up to 10 payment cards) and you will collect Avios when you shop with one of our partners, including department stores like Harvey Nichols, and restaurant chains like Gaucho or PizzaExpress.

And you can also collect in the more ‘traditional’ way when you use an Avios collecting credit or debit card to pay for your purchases at any retailer that accepts them. This allows you to collect Avios through your purchase with the retailer and through your Avios collecting credit card.

In both these cases your Avios will be added automatically to your airline club account for you to use.

Depending on what suits you best, there are a few different ways you can go about collecting Avios with hotel or car hire bookings.

You can book through Avios Hotels, powered by Expedia, or you can book with one of our many hotel and accommodation partners in the same way you would when shopping online and using the tracked linktracked link and making your booking that way.

We have dozens of partners, including Booking.com, Premier Inn and Airbnb, so you’re not short of options for your next getaway.

Avios car hire works in partnership with Avis and Budget so you can visit the Avios car hire page, search for your pick up and drop off locations, choose your car, and book.

In both cases your Avios will be automatically added to your airline club account once you have completed your stay or rental.

Don’t fancy hiring a car? You can also link your British Airways Club account to your Uber account and collect for every eligible journey you take, or collect every time you book a train ticket with Trainline.

There are two American Express® Credit Cards that you can collect Avios with, regardless of where you shop. These are the British Airways American Express® Credit Card (Representative 29.1% APR variable) and the British Airways American Express® Premium Plus Card (Representative 135.7% APR variable, annual fee applies).

Eligible new Cardmembers could also get a Welcome Bonus depending on which Card they choose and how much they spend.

When you shop with a British Airways American Express® Card, you’ll collect Avios on everything you buy, and if you use your BA Amex® Card when you shop via Avios.com, you’ll collect even more.

That’s not all - if you spend more than £15,000 in a Cardmembership year then you’ll also be eligible for a Companion Voucher. This means you can take someone with you on the same flight and in the same cabin for no additional Avios when booking a Reward Flight for two. Or if you’re travelling alone, a Companion Voucher will get you a 50% discount on the Avios price of your Reward Flight.
